Things you can get for 10 baht #9, a delightful tale in which Ian acquires a scrumptous ice cream treat, but is put off by the gelatinous white ovoids

For our (possibly last) installment in the TYCGF10B series, I present to you this cup of ice cream:


The street vendor had no signs and spoke no English, so I said the word for one ('nung') and watched to see what I got. It started out simple, with two scoops of vanilla, but sped into a blur I could scarce follow. The vendor disappeared in a whirlwind of chocolate sauce and candied things. An observer from above may have been able to see the treat building within the eye of this sugar-storm, but I had to wait for the last clouds of ice to die down. What emerged was a bowl packed with goodies, brimming with additional scoops and flavors of ice cream, candied pineapple, chocolate sauce, and a nasty white gel I can best describe as rendered squid brain. I worried at the coming damage to my already troubled pocket book, but the punchline is of course already spoiled - I handed the lady 100 baht, and she gave me 90 back in change.

I still don't know what the white stuff is. I threw it out after one repugnant bite. The rest was quite tasty.

TYCGF10B: Fresh-Squeezed Tangerine Juice

This is probably my favorite thing you can get for 10 baht. I've been loving it since Day 1 in Thailand. It's made from these here greenish tangerines:


I bought some of these tangerines at the store, thinking I could harness their juicy power for myself. I found them dry, full of seeds, and just not that good. I'm not sure how they produce such excellent juice, but I will happily continue paying 10 baht for it.

TYCGF10B: Coconut Dough Balls

The latest entry in our "Things You Can Get For 10 Baht" series are these strange coconut dough ball things. They're cooked by pouring batter into a pan with a bunch of hemispherical indentations - the separate halves are scooped out and pressed together to make a ball. Behold:

Chewy on the outside, doughy on the inside, these little balls taste sugary, coconutty, and, mysteriously, green-oniony.

Sugary grease-bread, another thing you can get for 10 baht

Tiara spotted someone serving a naan-like substance on the street today. We both enjoy good flatbread, so we picked one up:
You can see in the picture that it's a little goopier than your standard naan. That's because the vendor doused the sucker in condensed milk then smothered it in sugar before handing it to us. So much for our savory flatbread.

Here you can see the grease soaking through the paper it was wrapped in. The net effect was like a churro minus cinnamon. Not bad, but it's no banana roti.

Things you can get for 10 baht: Half a pineapple

I'm averaging about a pineapple a day here. If 10 baht pieces were votes, I'd be supporting the Pineapple-Stick ticket this election season.

mr bun is very cute. The buns themselves are kind of weird. Pictured above is the 'choc chip' and 'coconut' buns, each 10 baht.
Above is some kind of green vegetable that was fried in a patty form, then chopped up. I got it from a street vendor, but it steamed up the bag they gave it to me in so I dumped it into this bowl. Very delicious, wish I knew what it was.
